Wooden bulkheads, like the one pictured at National Grid at 287 Maspeth Avenue , are alternatives to metal bulkheads. The wood allows mussels and other filter feeding organisms to grow, but it is far from perfect. The mussels filter bacteria, algae, and other small particles. Many waste management sites line the sides of Newtown Creek. Sims Metal Management by Greenpoint Avenue, Queens, New York is one. The number of industrial sites makes it hard to coordinate efforts to improve water quality in the creek. During storms the trash of New York City bypasses treatment facilities and ends up in the waterway. This boom floats in Maspeth Creek, a tributary of Newtown Creek, stops trash from flowing from the storm drain outlet on 49th and Maspeth Avenue into the East River and out to the Atlantic Ocean. The trash is collected on a weekly basis by Riverkeeper. March 3rd 2016
