Montauk Cutoff Bridge

Built in the 1940s, the bridge stands over the Dutch Kills waterway off the Newtown Creek in Queens.

Headquartered under the Pulaski Bridge, the North Brooklyn Boat Club takes people out canoeing around Newtown Creek and the East River.

The number of industrial sites makes it hard to coordinate efforts to improve water quality in the creek. Some businesses have been working closely with environmental organizations like the Newtown Creek Alliance to minimize their impact on the waterway. March 3rd 2016

During storms the trash of New York City bypasses treatment facilities and ends up in the waterway. This boom floats in Maspeth Creek, a tributary of Newtown Creek, stops trash from flowing from the storm drain outlet on 49th and Maspeth Avenue into the East River and out to the Atlantic Ocean. The trash is collected on a weekly basis by Riverkeeper. March 3rd 2016
